Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is a tool employed by all youth development professionals. How we, as an industry, reduce disparities between school and outside school time is a large part of our success as summer camps. SEL is always evolving and it has always been a part of summer camp in an organic way. How do we, as industry leaders, bridge the gap between schools, where SEL is not a standardized part of a curriculum, and camp where it is woven into everything we do? Within camp SEL may mean different things based on your particular program, so how do we streamline leadership teams to have a common goal when it comes to SEL and your campers and staff? Are we SOL without intentional SEL?

Dr. Patricia Heindel, Professor of Psychology and Vice-President of Academic Affairs at Saint Elizabeth University
Dr. Heindel is a Professor of Psychology and Vice-President of Academic Affairs at Saint Elizabeth University. She founded and directs the Center for Human and Social Development at the University and co-directs the School Culture and Climate Initiative with Elizabeth Hansen Warner. She is also the co-director with Maurice Elias, Ph.D. of Rutgers, of the Academy for Social-Emotional Learning in Schools, an online community and certificate program in SEL and character development (selinschools.org). She is also a co-director of the New Jersey Institute for Community Schools and is the vice-president and treasurer of SEL4NJ. Dr Heindel often speaks locally, regionally and nationally on integrated SEL and on creating a positive culture and climate in schools and youth serving organizations.
