Sometimes working at camp feels like you are sprinting a marathon. The “always-on” nature of our jobs means that we have a high chance of burnout--and so do members of our team. In this two-part, interactive series, we invite you to join Sarah Kurtz McKinnon from The Summer Camp Society to first understand how we can make working at camp more sustainable for our team members (hosted on 1/11) and then realistically and authentically workshop how we can make working at camp sustainable for ourselves (2/15).
In the first workshop, examined the following questions:
- When and why do camp staff thrive? What factors enable them to perform at their best and also maintain their mental and physical health during the summer?
- What organizational attributes can we cultivate to help camp be more sustainable for our team members?
This workshop will be about our personal experience as camp leaders. Participants will be asked to personally examine and chart times during their most recent year at camp when they felt as if they were surviving, thriving, or reviving their energy. We will then discuss tactics for increasing our ability to thrive and revive during camp—and chart out an action plan for next summer.
